How to connect a Playstation 3 controller to Android
As promised, we bring you a second tutorial on connecting a controller to your Android device. Instead of playing games using the inferior touchscreen of your Android device, read this tutorial and try playing games using the Playstation 3 controller. Note that you can use the PS3 controller just like the Xbox 360 controller with the OTG cable (the whole procedure is described in our first tutorial on playing games on Android using a controller). However, in this tutorial we will be talking about connecting the Playstation 3 controller to your Android phone wirelessly.
Before even starting, you should know that we can only confirm that this works on rooted phones. If your phone is rooted, this is very easy to set up, all you need is to download the “Sixaxis controller” app. The application is available for download from the Google Play Store, but don’t download it until you have checked if your device is compatible with it. To ensure that your Android device is up for the job, firstly download another application called “Sixaxis compatibility checker” and run a test on it. Simply tap on Start in the application and, if all is well, you will see a message informing you that your device appears to be supported. What you should do here is take notice of the local Bluetooth address in the bottom of the message. Write down this master address because you will be using it shortly.
Once you know that your device is compatible, download the full application. It costs a little bit of money, but it is worth it.
Then, download the SixaxisPair Tool and install it on your computer.
After you have installed the SixaxisPair Tool, connect the Playstation 3 controller to your computer using a USB cable. Open the SixaxisPair Tool you have just downloaded and wait until some drivers are installed. You will see a window containing an empty field called Change Master. Here you should enter the master you had written earlier from the Sixaxis compatibility checker. Click on Update and disconnect your PS3 controller from your computer.
Open the Sixaxis app on your phone. You will see a message informing you that Sixaxis Controller must be enabled in Language and Keyboard settings to use the Sixaxis. Change the input method on the app by clicking on it in the Language and Keyboard settings and then on Continue. Then go back in the Sixaxis app and press Start to begin scan, followed by pressing the power button on your PS3 controller. When the app finds the controller, it will display a message saying “Successfully configured Bluetooth”. Next, press the Menu button on the Sixaxis app, select Preferences>Input Mappings>1st Controller Mappings and you will be able to bind the Android keys to the buttons on your controller.
Following that, you’ll need to edit the bindings on your emulator’s options menu as same as you did on your Sixaxis Controller application previously. Finally, you are ready to go and you will be able to use your Playstation 3 controller on your Android phone for hours of gaming fun!
