At the time when most of the phones are packing in same kind of hardware and even software (usually Android), brands have to make a lot of efforts to differentiate their offerings. It seems like Sony knows this very well and has designed a uni-body aluminum casing for the Xperia SP. Due to the use of premium materials and high-precision crafted buttons (power button, etc.), the phone looks and feels extremely good.

At the bottom of the phone, an illuminating strip is there, its color matches the theme being used or album art of the music (while playing the music). The illuminations can be customized for notifying you about incoming calls, text messages and even Facebook notifications. While listening to music, the illumination lights up according to the music beat and become more intense as the volume increases.
The right side of the phone consists of Power button, Camera button and a volume rocker.

  • The left side houses an USB jackend slots for Micro-SIM and microSD cards. 3.5 mm audio jack finds its place at top of the phone.
  • The back has the 8MP camera along with a small speaker and an LED flash. The shine of the illuminating strip is visible from the back as well. The back cover of the phone is non-removable, which means battery can’t be replaced.
  • The phone is available in White, Black and Red color variants.

The phone has impressive 4.6-inch Gorilla Glass screen with 720p resolution. It equates to pixel density of 319 ppi (pixel per inches).

For better viewing experience, Sony has used technologies called Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and Reality Display. These technologies makes brings screen intelligence to the phone by enhancing contrasts, reduction of noise, displaying vivid colors, etc.

Xperia SP’s camera is an 8 MP shooter with Exmor RS imaging sensor from Sony. This technology gives the sensor luminosity  and color noise reduction, which gives the ability to click highly detailed pictures from the phone. The camera works pretty well even in low lightning conditions- even at night.
The camera has HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology which allows capturing clear photos against strong backlight. Although in Xperia SP, HDR only works for still pictures and not for videos.
The phone gives an automatic setting to click perfect pictures called-‘Superior Auto’. The picture is shot with optimal settings combining scene recognition with high quality and high performance image processing technology (including HDR and noise reduction) to automatically shoot the picture with the optimal settings.

In terms of video, the camera can shoot 1080p (HD-High definition) video.

The phone comes with Android 4.1.2 (Jellybean), which has already got good reviews for its smooth and great interface. Sony has customized the stock Android and also included few of its apps like the Album, Walkman music player, movies, etc. It can’t be compared to the customization and usability that HTC Sense adds to stock Android, still Xperia SP’s UI is aesthetically pleasing.

Considering the target segment of Xperia SP, Xperia SP is a great choice with good design, decent hardware, combined with Sony’s technology for camera and music. The phone will be launched in second quarter of 2013 and its pricing is yet to be announced. Looking at the fierce competition the mobile market is, Sony will have to price the phone well.
